Android app not starting automatically

By default, our Android app is configured/set up to start automatically when the player is turned on. Although this this works on all devices that we have tested it on it is possible that it does not work on your player.

Make sure to set the Auto reboot frozen channel setting for your players that use our Android app. This will make sure the players continue playing your content if they run into trouble.

There can de several reasons why the Android app does not start when it should. Here are some ways to work around these. If none of these work for your player please let us know.

Potential Cause

The app was "force stopped", possibly crashed.

Potential Solution

You can check if this is the case by opening the Android Settings and then choose Apps. You then select the Playr app. If the "Force stop" button is disabled the app has indeed been stopped or crashed. By closing the Settings app and starting the Playr app this problem is solved. When the Playr app is running and the player is restarted the Playr app will start when the player has started.

Potential Cause

All Android devices run a device-specific slightly different version of Android. Usually the device-specific parts of Android are there to make sure the best performance is gained from the specific hardware (optimised drivers). However, sometimes the changes that are present are more generic and influence what apps can and cannot do on a device. Automatic startup of an app when a device is turned on can be influenced by these changes that were made to Android.

Potential Solution

It is possible that another app is configured to also start when the device is turned on and that this app gets preferred/interferes. In that case it is best to uninstall the other app.

Another possibility is that automatic startup of apps via the generally accepted way is not permitted. In that case try out one of the apps that has been designed to specifically to launch apps when devices are turned on such as; "Autostart - No root", "Autostart and StaY!", "Autostart App Manager" or "Auto Start Manager". These apps can be found in the Google Play Store (please don't install Android apps from other sources). Each of these apps allows you to choose Playr as the app that should be started when the player is turned on.
